Tannersville sits in the Catskills Mountains, one of New York State's popular vacation destinations. The town gets its name from a tannery that existed here until the supply of hemlock bark—an essential ingredient in the tanning process—was depleted. Today, Tannersville provides an array of services and several accommodation choices, allowing visitors to experience the area year round. In the winter, cross-country ski trails and downhill skiing at nearby Hunter Mountain draw visitors to Tannersville. One of the other local attractions is the Mountain Top Arboretum, a collection of both native and introduced trees and shrubs. The Arboretum welcomes visitors 365 days a year, however tours are given only from June to September. Tannersville is approximately 5 mi (8 km) from Hunter and the Hunter Mountain ski resort.
